During these difficult and uncertain times, it can be hard to stay positive. You may be constantly watching the news, reading negative articles and missing your loved ones which is making you feel unstable – but you can change that!

We are all staying safe in our homes for the foreseeable future, and a lot of people are becoming bored very quickly. As much as it’s a daunting time for all of us, there are still plenty of things to do to keep us going!

Some of you may be working very hard every day to keep your community happy, some of you will be working through the nights to keep patients healthy and well, and some of you might be driving around to deliver food to those who need it… but EVERYBODY is going through this together.

We all need to stay positive! So here are a few things you can do to keep busy from day to day…

Baking Day

You may have a day off from work, or you might be sitting around at home wondering what to do… well baking is a great way to get those in your household together for the day.

You can download recipes online, get a cookbook out or watch the latest Great British Bake Off episodes to get some inspiration on what to bake.

All ages can get involved in this activity, so get your aprons on and start baking!

Daily Exercise

The government have explained that you are allowed out once a day to exercise. You could go for a walk with your dog, go for a run, cycle around your town, or go swimming in the sea if you live by the seaside (life guards will be monitoring the beaches at all times to make sure you’re not out for too long).

Doing your daily exercise will give you the fresh air you need, and you will notice your mood change if you’re feeling down or anxious.

Video Calls, Virtual Pub Quizzes and Date Nights

Missing your friends, family and loved ones? Video calling is a great way to stay in touch with those you are used to seeing regularly.

An app called HouseParty has recently become very popular as you can do group video chats and play games against each other.

A lot of families are also hosting virtual quiz nights. This feels like you’re all still together, and you’re having fun at the same time.

Also, a lot of couples that may not be living together are having virtual date nights. They pour themselves a drink, and just chat over the phone to feel close to one another.

Learn a New Skill

If you’re stuck at home until the foreseeable future, then this is the perfect time to learn a new skill. You may way to learn basic photography, a new arts/craft skill, how to become a YouTuber, or how to write a book… whilst you’re at home with no distractions, you might as well try something new!

Udemy is a great website that holds lots of different online courses, and some of them come with a great offer! Take a look on there to see what they’re offering, and you may find something that suits you well.

Also, you may work in an industry where you coach other people in a certain skill. If you’re wondering how to keep your business running – start creating virtual sessions or record tutorials for those who miss learning with you.


Meditation is good for your mind and your mental health. Find a quiet spot in your house/garden, put some peaceful music on, close your eyes and relax! At times like this, we need to have a healthy mind to keep positive and strong.


If you have a garden and it needs a bit of love, get your gardening gloves and tools out!

It can be very satisfying seeing your garden progress, and being out in the fresh air will keep you happy. It’s also healthy for you to be in touch with nature, and you will learn new skills along the way too!

Redecorate Your Home

If you’ve got bored of seeing the same coloured walls in your living room for the last 15 years, then why not buy some paint and give it a makeover? Decorating your home can be very enjoyable, and you will feel proud when you have finished.

Decorating your home will take your mind off of negative situations, and you’ll notice that your days will fly by!

Movie Days

With all this extra time on your hands, it’s the perfect time to have some movie days! You can gather your favourite DVDs together, watch a new film/series on Netflix or download Disney+ and have a Disney day with your children.

Being drawn into a movie takes your mind off of the pandemic and makes you feel like you’re somewhere else for a few hours. Put your feet up and enjoy yourself!

Support Your Local Shops/Takeaways

A lot of shops and takeaways are still open for business, and it’s only fair that you support them… so why not have a takeaway night?

Your local businesses are staying open to keep their community happy and fed, so it would be kind of you to thank them by supporting them in these difficult times.
